]]>Halloween is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than by infusing your home with the rich and vibrant aesthetics of African decor. In this blog post, we'll explore how to achieve a perfect blend of spooky and cultural in your Halloween decorations using African-inspired elements.
You may be thinking, how do I decorate my home for halloween? How do I make my home look haunted? How do I decorate for Halloween without looking tacky or how to decorate a small space for Halloween?
Don't worry I got you covered. Decorating for Halloween with African decor elements is easier than you think and will create a unique and captivating ambiance. Here are 7 of my favorite ways to incorporate African decor into your Halloween decorations.
First choose the right color palette. While African decor typically boasts a vibrant array of colors, for Halloween, focus on a palette of black, white, and neutrals with small pops of color like orange and burgundy. These colors are ideal for creating a spooky atmosphere while maintaining the cultural essence of your decor. And neutrals are easier to mix into your existing decor when halloween is over.
1. Woven Baskets as Halloween Decor: Start with woven baskets in various sizes and shapes. These versatile pieces can serve as unique containers for your Halloween candy or even as hanging decorations. Raffia baskets have a natural, earthy aesthetic that fits well with the Halloween theme, particularly if you're going for a rustic or organic look. They add a touch of authenticity to your decor. The woven texture of raffia baskets creates visual interest and depth in your Halloween decor. They can break up the monotony of flat surfaces and add a tactile element to your display.
Raffia baskets come in various sizes and shapes, making them versatile decor elements. You can use them as containers for Halloween treats, as table centerpieces, or even as hanging decorations. Raffia is a natural fiber often used in African and other traditional crafts. By incorporating raffia baskets, you can pay homage to cultural craftsmanship and add cultural depth to your Halloween celebrations. Raffia baskets can be easily customized to fit your Halloween theme. You can add spooky motifs, or even attach decorative elements like faux cobwebs or bats.
2. Bone Napkin Rings: Set a hauntingly elegant table with bone napkin rings. These natural textures evoke the essence of African decor while adding a touch of macabre to your Halloween dinner settings. Bone napkin rings inherently carry a slightly eerie and Halloween-appropriate aesthetic due to their material.
The association with bones and skeletons fits well with the spooky theme of Halloween. Plus they add an authentic touch to your Halloween decor that mass-produced items can't replicate. Each napkin ring may have its own distinct design, making your decor truly unique.
3. Woven Raffia Drink Coasters: Raffia, with its natural texture, adds an intriguing and slightly rustic element to your Halloween decor. The black color provides a dark and spooky aesthetic, perfect for Halloween. Which lends a subtle spookiness to your decor without being overly gory or frightening. It's an elegant way to infuse Halloween spirit into your home.
Plus, these black raffia coasters can be easily paired with other Halloween-themed decor elements, such as black and orange candles, pumpkins, or spooky figurines. They blend seamlessly with a wide range of Halloween decor styles. Handmade drink coasters with African-inspired designs will be a hit. Whether it's tribal patterns or wood coasters they will not only protect your surfaces but also add an authentic African feel to your Halloween party.
4. Black Mud Cloth-Inspired Pillows: Swap out your regular throw pillows for mud cloth-inspired ones in black, white, and neutral colors. The deep black color and intricate mud cloth inspired pattern creates an air of mystery and intrigue, which aligns perfectly with the spooky and enigmatic vibe of Halloween. These pillows can be used to adorn sofas, chairs, or even as floor cushions.
Their versatility allows you to place them throughout your Halloween-themed space, adding both style and comfort. Black is also one of the quintessential Halloween colors, and mud cloth pattern pillows in black seamlessly fit into a broader Halloween color scheme.
They can be paired with other Halloween-themed decor elements like orange or deep red accents. While perfect for Halloween, these pillows are not limited to a single holiday. You can continue to use them in your decor throughout the year, making them a worthwhile investment.
5. Wood Spoons and Utensils: The contrast between the warm, earthy tones of olive wood and the stark white of bone inlay creates a visually striking effect. This combination can add a touch of elegance and intrigue to your Halloween decor. You can also use these wooden items as props for your Halloween-themed food and drinks. For instance, serve sauces, dips and more using an African-inspired wooden spoon. They can be placed in jars, vases, or even used as stirring utensils for themed cocktails, adding both style and functionality to your decor.
After Halloween, these spoons can continue to be used in your kitchen or displayed as decorative items. They serve as meaningful mementos of your Halloween celebrations. Lastly, these wood spoons add an international flavor to your Halloween decor, reminding your guests of the global perspective of the holiday and the interconnectedness of cultures.
6. Mud Cloth Fabric Throws: Drape mud cloth fabric throws over your sofas and chairs. They not only provide warmth but also bring a sense of African authenticity to your Halloween decor. Opt for patterns that resonate with the spooky season. Use authentic mud cloth fabrics as table runners or tablecloths. Their earthy tones and tribal patterns can add a rustic and spooky vibe to your Halloween decorations.
Mud cloth fabric can be used in various ways, such as tablecloths, table runners, wall hangings, or even as upholstery for furniture. Its versatility allows you to integrate it seamlessly into different aspects of your Halloween decor. The combination of cultural heritage and Halloween aesthetics creates a unique and captivating atmosphere. The dark background of mud cloth, often in deep black or brown, effortlessly fits into the classic Halloween color scheme. You can complement it with other Halloween colors like orange, red, or deep purple.
7. African Fabric Scraps: African fabrics are known for their bold and vibrant colors, as well as intricate patterns. These characteristics can add a lively and eye-catching element to your Halloween decorations.
Here's some of my favorite African print fabric scrap ideas for halloween. 1) Bunting: Put African fabric scraps into triangular shapes and create a colorful fabric bunting. Hang it around your Halloween party area or fireplace for a festive atmosphere. 2) African Fabric Ghosts: Create ghostly figures using white fabric and drape them with colorful African fabrics. Hang them around your home or in your garden for a spooky yet culturally rich Halloween touch. 3) Luminaries: Create fabric-covered luminaries by wrapping glass jars with African fabric and securing them with glue. Place battery-operated tea lights inside for a spooky and colorful glow. 4) Trick-or-Treat Bags: Sew African fabric scraps into small bags or totes for trick-or-treating. They'll stand out and add a unique touch to your child's costume. All of these DIY projects are great idea to do with your kids too.
Costume Inspiration: Draw inspiration from African cultures when choosing your Halloween costume. You could go as an African tribal warrior, Nefertiti, Cleopatra, or an animal from the safari like the majestic lion. Wearing an African-inspired costume can facilitate cultural exchange and conversations, allowing you to share the significance and beauty of African culture.
African-inspired costumes are versatile and can encompass a wide range of styles and themes. You can choose from various African regions, time periods, and cultural elements to create a unique and personalized costume. African-inspired costumes promote diversity and inclusivity in Halloween celebrations. They remind us that culture is something to be celebrated, shared, and respected. Wearing an African-inspired costume can be empowering, as it allows you to embrace and express your appreciation for African heritage and culture.

With these African-inspired decor ideas, your home will be ready to celebrate Halloween in a style that's both spooky and culturally rich. Consider the size of the wall space you want to fill and choose baskets that will complement your existing decor.

Selecting Colors and Patterns That Complement Your Decor
African baskets come in a variety of colors and patterns, so it's important to choose ones that complement your existing decor. If you have a neutral color palette, consider using baskets with bold, bright colors to add a pop of color to your walls. Hanging Techniques for African Baskets
Once you've chosen your baskets, it's time to hang them on your walls. There are a variety of hanging techniques you can use, depending on the size and weight of the baskets.
Hooks for hanging baskets on the wall.
For smaller baskets, you can use adhesive strips, mounting putty or hooks to hang them on the wall. These are easy to install and won't damage your walls. For larger baskets, you may need to use picture hangers or screws to ensure they are securely attached to the wall.
How to Hang African Baskets on Your Walls
To hang African baskets on your walls, start by measuring the space where you want to hang them. Use a pencil to mark the spot where you want to place the basket. If you're using adhesive strips or hooks, follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation. Once you've hung your baskets, step back and admire your handiwork. Adjust the placement of the baskets as needed until you're happy with the overall look.
Tips for Styling Your African Basket Wall Decor

When styling your basket wall decor, consider the height at which you hang the baskets. Hanging baskets at different heights can create visual interest and add dimension to your walls.
Mixing and Matching Baskets for an Eclectic Look
One of the best things about African baskets is their versatility. They can be mixed and matched to create a unique and eclectic look that reflects your personal style. Consider combining baskets of different shapes, sizes, and colors to create a one-of-a-kind display.

Caring for Your African Baskets
To ensure your African baskets remain in good condition, it's important to take proper care of them. A recent US report suggests that over 11 million tons of textiles go to waste annually, posing a significant environmental crisis. But what if you can extend the lifetime of your clothes and make a positive environmental impact? Textiles are created from diverse materials, which may be sensitive to environmental conditions, including humidity, light, and airborne dirt. Below are the four best ways to care for your clothes.
1. Proper storage
Keeping your clothes in good condition begins with proper storage. Always use high-quality hangers, such as wood. Hanging clothes in your closet helps preserve their form and avoid wrinkles. As much as possible, avoid using wire and plastic hangers. Folding and storing heavier clothing, such as sweaters, on a shelf is an excellent alternative. These types of clothing may expand out and break their form if kept on hangers. Avoid putting away your clothes until they are entirely dry. When partly damp clothing is stored in a cabinet, it may acquire a bad odor. Mold and germs thrive in damp environments.
2. Less washing
Consider your options before washing your clothes. Doing laundry too frequently can cause harm to the fibers and so limit the lifespan. This is particularly true regarding dry washing, which involves using harmful elements that could flatten the natural fiber follicles in some materials. If an item isn't unclean but needs to be freshened up, consider handing it in a steamy bathroom or outside to dry instead of throwing it in the wash.
3. Don't ignore the care labels
Your laundry approach should vary depending on the material. For instance, you should wash wool only when necessary, using a wool cleanser by hand or on a soft cycle. Delicate textiles like silk and cashmere require proper care and handling since they are prone to harm from heat and strong chemicals. Pay close attention to the label instructions, which will tell you the maximum suggested temperature for washing an item. Without an appropriate care or content label, it would be impossible to know the best way to care for certain garments, reducing the fabric's lifespan.
4. Always sort laundry
When washing your clothing in the washing machine, they mix as they spin around. Sorting your laundry protects your garments from color transfer, being tugged by metal zippers, and other problems. If you do not organize your laundry, it may harm the delicate fabrics. Additionally, avoid over loading your washer machine since it can cause your appliance to fail prematurely. In severe circumstances, your garments may become caught between the machine's door seal and inner drum, tearing or permanently damaging them. Learning to fix your machine can be useful if your washer won't drain, is clogged, or is jammed. This will go a long way to ensure your clues aren’t damaged and your machine can serve you longer.
The statistics provide a hard reality behind the significance of properly cleaning and caring for your clothes. A garment's whole life cycle is environmentally harmful, from manufacture to upkeep through disposal. It is, therefore, essential to take proper care of your clothes to ensure they last longer.

]]>Winter, with its fresh air, variety of outdoor activities, and cozy apparel, can be enjoyable, and a lot of people do actually love it, even if they pretend otherwise. However, it's also possible to feel confined and uninspired during this time of year. Suffering from the winter blues is something that really does happen, and it could mean that you're feeling unmotivated to do anything, go anywhere, or improve things for yourself.
Don't get into the habit of not doing anything; even if you're feeling down, there are things you can improve on. Changing up your daily routine can help you feel better and happy again. The good news is that it's not hard to get back on your feet when winter has caused you to feel bad. Try these tips, and you might be able to say goodbye to the winter blues.
You might assume that the only people who should go to a therapist are those who have been diagnosed with some particular and specific mental health problem. However, although therapy will indeed help those people, you don’t have to have been diagnosed with anything or even be suffering from anything to get some benefit out of visiting a therapist. It could just be that talking to a professional because you’re feeling down is enough to help you feel better and move on, winter or not.
Think about it this way; we go to see our doctor every year, our dentist twice a year, our optometrist every couple of years, and so on, and we do this even if (usually if) there is nothing wrong at all. So why shouldn’t it be the same when it comes to taking care of our mental health? The fact that this kind of therapy can help when it comes to the winter blues is definitely a benefit, of course, but the more people who see a therapist regularly, the more people can get the help they didn’t realize they needed.
It can be easy to fall into the trap of winter comfort foods that are actually bad for you. They might make you feel good for a little while, especially if you have the winter blues, but overall, they’ll cause problems with your weight and happiness.
This is why it’s a good idea to use seasonal ingredients in your cooking. When you use fresh ingredients that are only available at this time of year, cooking becomes a fun experiment rather than a chore, and you’ll be more interested in finding out how to use these items (and what they are) than bypassing them all for unhealthy food.
The more light you can get during the winter, the better. It's a wonderful way to fight off the blues. Melatonin is the hormone that makes you sleepy, and both natural light and specially designed sun lamps keep your body from making too much of it. This means that you will have more energy to use.
On cloudy days, a lightbox can make your room and your mood feel like the sun is shining. They also help you sleep and wake up at regular times. Lightbox bulbs give off 20 times more light than regular bulbs and put out very little UV radiation. Choose one with at least 10,000 lux and use it for 30 minutes in the morning.
You can also go outside more. This might not seem like a great idea when you consider winter temperatures (and the temperature might be the thing that is causing you the most stress), but once you do it, you’ll find that you feel better a lot of the time. This is due to the fact that you’re able to breathe in the fresh air, get exercise, and get a good dose of vitamin D from the sunlight.
Remember, though, that you should stock up on sunscreen online and wear it every time you go outside. Just because the sun doesn’t feel too hot or strong doesn’t mean harmful UV rays aren’t damaging your skin. Make it a habit to wear sunscreen all year round and get the most out of the sun every day.
Exercising is widely known to be excellent at relieving stress and revitalizing the body and mind. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain an exercise routine throughout the colder months. Start slow and work up to 30-60 minutes of exercise five days a week if you aren't already active. Alternate between cardiovascular exercise, weight training, and stretching.
The 10-10-10 approach is great for times you don't have a whole 30 minutes to devote to working out. Walk for ten minutes at a time, three times a day. Spend as much time as possible outside. Soak up as much sunlight as possible to reap these rewards, as we mentioned above.
Amazingly, research has shown that a person's physical health and longevity are more directly affected by the quality of their friendships than by the quality of their marriage or other partnerships.
Your daily mood can also be affected by your friendships. Call a friend or arrange to meet them somewhere to experience an instant uptick in your mood. If you can’t see them in person, try a video call, and as a last resort, a text exchange can also help. The point is, if you’re feeling down during the winter months, keeping in touch with the people you love most will make you feel a lot better.
If you've ever written in a journal, you know how much fun it can be. But it can also help when you don't feel like doing much – just like when you're experiencing the winter blues. The great thing about jotting your thoughts down in a journal is that you don’t actually have to stick to a specific format. You can do anything as long as it’s creative. Why not draw a sketch, paint a picture, or write a poem? Put these things inside your journal and do it regularly – every day is ideal, but once a week might work too.
If you’re feeling stuck about what to write in your journal, try gratitude. Think of one thing every day that you’re grateful for and write that down. Not only will this improve your mood at the time, but when you’re feeling down in the future, you’ll be able to leaf through your journal and see all the positive things that have happened to you and around you.
When it's cold outside, it's easy to give up your hobbies and stay inside under a warm blanket doing nothing at all. The truth is that this is something that can be very beneficial (the doing nothing aspects, at least) because it allows us to re-set, re-energize and rest.
However, don’t let it become a daily habit. If you do that, your hobbies can become entirely forgotten because it’s easier not to do something than it is to do it. Yet having hobbies and enjoying them is so good for you, and they can make you feel better when you’re feeling down. So try to make room for them in your life, and it can make a big difference.
Or why not start a new hobby if you’re not feeling inspired by the ones you currently do? During the winter months, you’ve got the perfect opportunity to do some research and then be ready to start once the new year rolls around.
Happy colors are bright, warm colors like yellow, orange, pink and red. Pastel colors like peach, light pink or lilac can also have an uplifting effect on your mood. The brighter and lighter a color, the more happy and optimistic it will make you feel.
Throw pillows, fresh flowers, candles or baskets are a great and simple way to introduce color in your home without overwhelming the room. Use color, pattern and texture to create a sense of renewal. When your home feels happier it will make you feel better too.

When you’ve lived in the same home for several years, you accumulate a lot of possessions. Your house might start off spotlessly clean with plenty of space but over time it can end up feeling claustrophobic and cluttered.
The arrival of children can accelerate this impression, as you have to somehow squeeze a whole new person and all their stuff into your existing space. And with every new hobby, kitchen gadget, or addition to your wardrobe, the amount of room left in your little home gets smaller and smaller.
A crowded home can have a lot of negative effects on your wellbeing. Living in clutter makes you feel stressed and unproductive. You may not even realize it in the moment, but spending a lot of time in a cramped and messy room will cause you to feel a low level sense of frustration and anxiety. Over time, all this stress can have a significant impact on your mental health.
You want to have a home in which you can feel proud entertaining guests at dinner parties and outdoor barbecues in summer. You want your children to be able to have sleepovers and have space to run around with their friends. And if you want to grow your family in the future, you want to know you can have another child without making your home unlivable.
So what can you do to make more space in your home? The following article looks at a number of ways you can reduce clutter and adopt good habits that will permanently transform your living space. Read on to learn more.
You can’t declutter your home without first having a spring clean. Otherwise you’ll just be moving your junk from one place to another without making any difference. All homes are full of the usual clutter that accumulates over many years. Old CDs, dog-eared books, unused kids’ toys, and clothes that don’t fit. Schedule in a weekend to go over your entire house with a fine tooth comb and get rid of anything that isn’t essential. Some people find it difficult to throw things away but once you get started you will find it immensely satisfying.
Come up with a list of criteria for deciding whether or not to get rid of something. If it hasn’t been used in several years it can definitely go. If it’s broken, then either fix it immediately or take it to the dump. You’ll be amazed how much better your home looks immediately.
And don’t worry about waste, as you don’t need to throw things in the trash. If your unwanted items are still perfectly usable, you can take them to a charity shop or sell them to a buyer who will get much more use out of them.
It’s no use decluttering your home if it’s just going to get messy again a few days later. A room feels a whole lot larger when there are no piles of clothes on the floor and junk strewn over every surface. Make an effort to adopt good habits at home to ensure it always stays tidy.
This means washing dishes right after the meal instead of leaving them until the morning. It means wiping down surfaces at night and hanging up your clothes before bed. These small behaviors will make all the difference, and living in a cleaner space will make you more motivated to keep it that way.
You should also be careful about the things you bring into your home. Now that you’ve gone to so much effort to clear out your junk, you don’t want to start bringing more useless stuff in. Set rules about only buying things you need, and try to adopt a more minimalist approach towards life, in which you only own the things that are essential for living happily and comfortably.
Smart storage solutions are a great option for households with a lot of possessions, as they allow you to keep your stuff hidden out of sight. There are so many possibilities when it comes to storage, such as woven baskets for your bookshelf or kitchen counter, or large containers that sit on top of or inside a wardrobe. Installing shelves at height allows you to keep clutter off the floor, while simply organizing cupboard space better allows you to store a great deal more inside.
There are also much more discreet options, enabling homeowners to keep rarely-used items completely hidden away until they are needed. For example, under-stair storage is a great place to keep out-of-season items, or even underfloor storage for your child’s huge collection of toys and board games.
If you have large items that are rarely used, they are taking up valuable real estate in your house. Bikes that only get taken out a couple of times a year, or old furniture you haven’t got round to selling yet. There is no need to have these sitting around in your spare room or garage. Instead, take them to a local self storage facility where they can lie in wait for a small fee until you need them.
There are so many people who live in tiny houses yet manage to make it work effectively. They achieve this by being conservative with their persons and creative with their use of space. Taking inspiration from owners of small homes can be a great way to get ideas for your place. Speak to people you know about the challenges they face and the solutions they have adopted to ensure their living space is comfortable.
Do you have a garage that rarely gets used? Or a basement or attic that just gathers dust? If so, these present enormous missed opportunities for transforming your space. Any of these areas can be converted into a fully functional room of your house, rather than simply a place to put your broken furniture and old cardboard boxes. With a few small changes, a spare bedroom can become a great home office. A basement or attic can be used for storage, but they could also be turned into a home gym or another bedroom depending on your needs. Don’t take your space for granted.
Do you really need a super king-sized bed, or could you and your spouse make do with a regular double? Now that your kids have flown the nest, maybe you could downsize your sofa to a smaller two-seater. Most homes are full of items that are considerably bigger than necessary, so see if there is a way you can shrink your furniture. By selling your larger items and switching them for smaller alternatives, you could make a nice little profit too.
You probably don’t think of your garden as a potential storage space, but it can be an excellent way to move bulky items out of the house. If you have a shed or garage outdoors, this is the perfect place to store bikes, tools, and out-of-season clothing until you need it. You no longer have to have these possessions cluttering up your porch or spare room. If you don’t have a shed in your garden, building one can be a fun project. You can pick up all the necessary materials from your local garden center or hardware store and have it built over the course of a single weekend.
One smart trick used by interior designers everywhere is to create the illusion of space in a home. A few nifty adjustments can make your home feel so much bigger without any actual increase in size. Color is one way you can achieve this, as certain shades and patterns make a room feel larger, while others can create a more crowded impression. Softer tones like off-whites and cool blues and green will achieve the desired effect, while bold, dark colors or busy patterns will do the opposite.
Large mirrors can also create a sense of space in a room, as can increasing the amount of sunlight the space receives by rearranging furniture away from windows. Moving furniture toward the corners and edges of each room and adding a large rug to the central floor area can make any living space feel vast and expansive.
These are just a few of the many ways in which any homeowner or renter can make more space in their home. When you adopt these techniques, you will soon feel the benefits to both your quality of life and your mental health. You will have so much more room to breathe while your family can engage in all kinds of activities without feeling overcrowded. Although some of these methods require a little expense and hard work, the results will be more than worth it in the end.

Pretty much all of us love to return home from a long, tiring day at work to a warm, comfortable, and inviting home. An inviting atmosphere is not something that can be bought in a box and added to your home, and it is not something that is quantifiable or the same for everyone. However, it is the thing that makes people want to visit your home and never want to leave because they feel so comfortable. And with the holidays upon us creating a cozy environment means that much more.
There are many really easy and cheap ways to create the relaxing home of your dreams, that both you, the people you live with and your friends will all love. Here's 4 ways to create a home that no one wants to leave.
Photo: Anitra Terrell
Step One: Create A Warm Welcoming Area
They say first impressions count, and this is never truer than when it comes to your home. When guests - and yourselves, for that matter, walk into your house, make them feel instantly welcome. Your hallway is probably the first room that they will see so make sure it is clean and tidy. Paint in lighter colors, as dark colors can often make small spaces seem even smaller, and carefully positioned mirrors to create an illusion of space and light. Think about seasonal touches, such as fairy lights wrapped around stair railings in the winter and bunches of bright, cut flowers in vases on side tables. Potted plants always look good, and will help to increase the oxygen in a room - which is always a good thing!

Step Two: Light Candles
Candles are an excellent way to make your home feel cozy and inviting. Just like the fire, it gives out a gentle light but also fills your home with beautiful scents of your choice. Whether you prefer citrusy and fruity scents or classic deeper smells, you will definitely find a candle that suits your personality and your home.
Image: William Fortunato
Step Three: Add texture with throws and cushions
Everyone loves snuggling down on their couch, surrounded by heaps of cushions and throws. Think about all the films and adverts, you see, with people curled up with a hot drink and a blanket over them. You want to feel like that, and you want your guests to feel like that, so by adding plenty, both on the sofas and perhaps in a basket near the fireplace, you always have some to hand. It also has the added appeal of adding a layer of warmth on cold days and saving money on those expensive energy bills!

Step Four: Clear Away The Clutter
Clutter is something that can cause agitation to both your guests and you. We are all guilty of putting something down, intending to put it away at some point, and weeks later, it is still in the same spot. Letters get put down on the side ready to be handled the next day, and before you know it, there are piles everywhere.
Try to implement a ‘touch once’ policy - handle things just once before putting them away or disposing of them. If you can't do this, then buy some cute storage baskets to hide it all - after all, out of sight, out of mind! If you have things cluttering up your sideboards that could be stored away, invest in self-storage. You can get storage solutions for almost anything, from furniture to wine storage.
---
We hope these 4 ways to create a home no one wants to leave will inspire you to create the home you've always wanted and one that your holiday guests will enjoy too.
We'd love to know which of the steps you'll be implementing and other ways you create a stay worthy home.

African baskets are functional pieces of art. They can be used as a bread basket on your table or keep your fruits and veggies together on the kitchen counter. African baskets are equally beautiful hung on the wall adding warmth, texture and culture.
And with the holidays right around the corner baskets are just the decorative accent you need to make entertaining at home that much better.
One of the biggest issues we run into when decorating with baskets is how to hang them on the wall. I'm often asked, what's the easiest way to hang baskets on the wall? Good news, I've got 3 methods you can try 2 of which won't put holes in your wall.
Let me start by saying most African baskets are handwoven with loops on the back and or top so you can hang them on your wall easily. They're also made with natural fibers like sisal, raffia and banana stalks making them tough and able to be secured to the wall with ease. Which brings me to option one nails.
Option 1: Nails
Using small nails to hang baskets on the wall is one of my favorite methods. Yes you'll end up with small holes in the wall but nails are sturdy and will keep the baskets level. As mentioned earlier you can use the loop on the basket to put it on the nail or hammer a small nail through the center of the basket to keep it in place.
You may be thinking hammering a nail through the center of the basket would damage it, but like I said before African baskets are tough and woven in a spiral pattern so you can often hammer through the center and not effect the basket.
Another tip for using nails when decorating with baskets is decide on where you want to place the baskets before hammering in the nails. That way you won't have several holes in the wall from mistakes.
If you're a renter be sure to check with your landlord before putting holes in the wall. Some landlords won't mind as long as the hole is below a certain size or you patch the holes when you move out.
Speaking of renter friendly ways to decorate your walls without nails the next two wall mounting methods can be done without drilling or hammering nails into the wall. If you love African baskets and dream of creating a gallery wall without putting holes in the wall these next two methods are for you.
Option 2: Mounting Putty
Mounting putty is a great way to decorate your home or apartment walls without nails because the putty sticks to the basket and your wall. Mounting putty's consistency is similar to play dough so you can mold and shape it to the back of your basket easily.
They key is to flatten the putty to the back of your basket then press it firmly to the wall. I often lightly tap the front center of the basket with a hammer to make sure the putty adheres to the wall. Mounting putty will not damage your basket when removed nor should it damage the wall as long as you remove it carefully.
Option 3: Peel and Stick Hooks
Peel and stick hooks are adhesive hooks for walls that have a sticky pad on the back and a hook on the front.
This option is great for hanging African baskets because it combines the best attributes of the first two methods. There's a hook similar to nails with an adhesive feature similar to mounting putty.
Peel and stick hooks come in many shapes and sizes some with metal hooks others plastic. Most can handle a decent amount of weight as well. You'll want to read the instructions to ensure the hooks are attached and removed from the wall correctly so your wall paint isn't damaged.
---
I hope our three ways to hang African baskets will inspire you to decorate your walls with baskets. And now that you know you can hang baskets without putting holes in the wall have fun and experiment with large and small baskets to create unique wall vignettes.
Which method will you try? If there's another method you use share in the comments.

One of my favorite things to do while traveling is exploring the local art scene in that city. Art galleries are a great way to check out local talent as well as artists' work from all over the globe.
While visiting New Orleans, I checked out Studio Be and was amazed at not only the size of the space but also the size, scale and messages behind the installations. I could have spent hours there taking in the exhibits because they spoke to me on a deeper level than work at most large museums I’ve visited.
I was so inspired I decided to curate a list of 10 black owned art galleries across the US. There’s something special about stepping into an art gallery with photographs, paintings, sculptures or fiber art that reflects who you are and your experiences.
Equally special is knowing these galleries are black owned with a unique eye, perspective and intention when it comes to cultivating their exhibits.
Many of us don’t think about the art galleries in our own backyard much less in other cities/countries but I invite you to check out the list below and add black owned art galleries to your list of places to visit while traveling near or far.
Our patronage is an important part of their survival so if we don’t support our artists who will.

When we think of decorating with African decor images of bold safari patterns, large wood carved animals and exotic art comes to mind. Those design elements while great for some can be intimating for others.
Incorporating African decor can be overwhelming especially if your design aesthetic is more on the neutral or minimalist side. But there's a way to add heritage decor while staying true to your cleaner, less is more design style.
Luckily, Kelly Collier-Clark shows us how incorporating just a few African decorative accents into your home can add the cultural vibe you've been looking for while blending seamlessly into your existing decor.
Let's take a look at my fellow Philly sistah's home!
Tell readers a little about yourself and where you live. My name is Kelly Collier-Clark, I am the Founder of Plot Twist Design, Plot Decor, and the Plot Twist Design Podcast. I’m a Realtor and have over 20yrs of corporate business experience. The firm is located in Blue Bell, just outside of Philadelphia PA where I was born and raised.
How would you describe your decorating style in three words and who or what influenced that style? I would describe my decorating style as; globally-inspired, chic, and clean. My style was heavily influenced by my grandmother and mother.
Do you have keepsakes or family heirlooms incorporated into your home decor? If so, what are they and why was it important to incorporate them? My keepsakes are incorporated in my home as photos. One that’s nearest & dearest to my heart is a photo of my grandmother holding my mother as a baby. I keep the photo in my wardrobe room. It’s important, because her class, poise, grace, and style in fashion helped me to be the woman I am today. And in this particular photo she’s dressed in her finest, head to toe.
What was one major decorating challenge you faced in your home and how did you solve it? This is easy! The biggest design challenge in my home was an airflow vent in my dining space. I have an open floor plan, so having that positioned higher than usual on the wall was the bane of my existence for some time.
It seemed worse after we painted the walls gray in that space with the vent left white. During quarantine I decided to paint the vent gray. It was an instant fix that almost muted the existence of it.
Why was it important for you to incorporate African decor in your home? What types do you have? It was important for me to incorporate African decor in my home to honor part of my heritage. I am still working on adding more, but to date I have an African JuJu Hat in my powder room. For those who don’t know, JuJu hats represent prosperity and were known to be worn during tribal ceremonies by royal dancers.
For those that are hesitant to incorporate African decor into their space or don’t know where to start, what's one piece of advice you’d give them? I would encourage them to start by researching some pieces of decor that fit best into their aesthetic style, so it looks cohesive and not forced or out of place.
At Reflektion Design our mantra is, See Yourself at Home. How does your home reflect who you are? My home is a bit of a hybrid. There’s a neutral aesthetic throughout the first level. There’s an element of bold surprise in my powder room with black marble flooring and wallpaper covering the walls and ceiling. The second level is similar, and my wardrobe room boasts all the boldest aesthetics. Throughout my home there is a calmness with pops of excitement.

P.S If you enjoyed this home tour, check out our previous tour featuring DIY queen, Orien Carter you're gonna love it!
]]>
Influenced by the music and films of the 80's and 90's Orien Carter was born to create. Her willingness to roll up her sleeves and add character to her home one DIY project at a time is inspiring.
We often feel like our home has to look a certain way based on trends or magazines; what I love about Orien's home and philosophy to decorating is it's your home, your rules. Decorate your home the way you want.
Let's take a look at her Northern, New Jersey home filled with beautiful DIY projects, African accents and personal style.
I like to say that I was created to create. My background is in event coordinating and design. Running my event business led me to creating and selling wedding and event favors and accessories such as wedding brooms for the tradition of jumping the broom. I began sharing my life as a creative mom on YouTube and Instagram in 2021 under the name “I Put The O In Mom”.
How would you describe your decorating style in three words and who or what influenced that style? Personally, I don’t subscribe to any design style, but if I had to, I would say that it’s eclectic, soulful, and cultured. My mother has 100% influenced my style. Being an “Afro Boho” plant mom is quite trendy now. I like to say my mother is the OG of that style. I get my, “make it work” attitude and love for thrifting from her as well.
Do you have keepsakes or family heirlooms incorporated into your home decor? If so, what are they and why was it important to incorporate them?I have both of my grandparent’s bibles on my bookshelf. They’ve both passed on, so it’s a privilege to be in possession of something like that. The built-in bookshelves in this house are one of my favorite features. So, I was intentional about what and how things are displayed. Those certainly had to make the cut.
What was one major decorating challenge you faced in your home and how did you solve it? Having an older home has been the biggest challenge. It’s an old colonial my husband and I purchased as a young couple. Older homes require more work which equals more money.
I’ve done most of it little by little over time. The larger projects that were out of my zone of genius we’re designed by me but carried out by our handyman. It’s still a work in progress but has come a mighty long way. Watching it become our own has been rewarding
Why was it important for you to incorporate African decor in your home? What types do you have and what countries are represented? I’m a bit of a homebody, so it’s important that my home feels good. Having our culture and heritage surrounding us feels right and welcoming. I would compare it to the difference between being in a room full of strangers, versus being in a room full of family and friends. If that makes sense.
In our home there is lots of African and African inspired art and décor. Including Mud cloth pillows, curtains, Zimbabwean bowls, Baoule art from the Ivory Coast and more.
For those that are hesitant to incorporate African decor into their space or don’t know where to start, what's one piece of advice you’d give them? I would say don’t be afraid to do it your way. I like to say, “My house, my rules” Don’t feel like your design approach has to look like everyone else’s. And have some fun learning about the cultural items that you may incorporate in your design.
If you were hosting a dinner party, what three people would you invite and why? My three dinner party guests would be The Singer Ari Lennox. I feel like her music is the best of old and new school music combined and I would love to write a song with her over dinner.
The second guest would be my sister because I always have the best time with her. And last I would say either Amanda Seales or Charlemagne The God because I enjoy good thought provoking conversations and/or debate.
At Reflektion Design our mantra is, See Yourself at Home. How does your home reflect who you are? My home reflects me because it has me written all over it. There is evidence of my love for art and music, especially hip hop, R&B and soul.
The 80’s and 90’s era music, tv and movies greatly shape who I am. The patterns, textures and color choices also help reflect me and my style. Most importantly my creativity is on display because our home is full of décor elements that I’ve made myself. Every single room has my influence on it and our culture’s influences on me. Which I hope will have an impact on our children.
Where can we find you online? You can find me on Instagram and on my YouTube channel, I Put The O In Mom where I share how I make unique one of a kind home décor pieces and home improvement videos.
Also, my Etsy shop www.etsy.com/shop/VisionPossibleCCC (CreatiOns) where you can purchase some of my creations.

]]>A nursing professor, professional organizer and interior stylist Jennifer Dubois is a multi talented creative with a knack for turning homes into a personal sanctuary.
The way she infuses African masks, baskets and mud cloth into her home yet keeps a serene, neutral color pallet is amazing.
Jennifer shows us how to mix and match items while creating a beautiful balance with pattern, texture and culture. Let's meet her and take a look at her San Diego home.
Tell readers a little about yourself and where you live. I am Jennifer Du Bois, a mom, wife and Yaya (grandmother). I am a part-time nursing professor and own a professional organizing business. I was born and raised in St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands and have been living in San Diego for the past 30 years.
Describe your decorating style in three words and who or what influenced that style? Afro-Caribbean, Transitional, Eclectic. My style of decorating is influenced by my deep desire to connect to my African roots. I am also very intentional about creating a calming sanctuary for my family and me.
What was one major decorating challenge you faced in your home and how did you solve it? I needed to create a home office, but didn’t have a dedicated space I could use. So, I created an “office at the bottom of the stairs”. I used a rug to define the space and added decorative elements to make it personal.
Why was it important for you to incorporate African decor in your home? I have been incorporating African decor in my home for over 20 years; I started with a set of masks that I purchased from a local market. I think that our homes should tell our story, represent who we are, and the things we enjoy.
It is especially important for me to create a space that supports a sense of pride for my sons I have a collection of masks and sculptures, mostly from Ghana. Some I purchased from local markets and Etsy; a few were gifted to me. I also have a collection of wall baskets and framed art I purchased from local stores. I recently added a mud cloth throw that I purchased from your online store.
For those that are hesitant to incorporate African decor into their space or don’t know where to start, what's one piece of advice you’d give them? I would start with one item. Visit local markets and seek out reputable vendors. Look at a variety of pieces, learn what each item represents, and purchase one that speaks to you. The beauty about African decor is that it plays well with other decor styles. Move it around your home until you find a spot that feels right.
If you were hosting a dinner party, what two people would you invite and why? God - I have so many questions! My Grandmother - She passed away a few years ago. A few years before she passed away, she lost her ability to communicate due to a stroke. We talked almost daily. I feel like she has so much more to share.
At Reflektion Design our mantra is, See Yourself at Home. How does your home reflect who you are? I love that mantra! I am very intentional about the elements I bring into our home. All of our chairs and sofa are neutral in color. My personality really shines through in the accent furniture pieces and decor. I love earthy elements and pieces that look like they were collected through travels. I love being home and I love that my family feels the same way.

]]>Her Caribbean roots infused with design education in Philly, Djalna McSween is a interior designer with an unapologetic approach to decorating her home.
Filled with African art, plants, books and two cats you can imagine her downtown loft has all the Afroboho vibes we love! Let's take a look at her Newark, NJ home.
Tell readers a little about yourself and where you live. My name is Djalna McSween, founder and owner of Djalna McSween Interiors a virtual and full service interior design studio based in Newark, NJ.
I was born in Trinidad (the birthplace of the steel pan and limbo), and raised in America’s Paradise, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. In 2006 I graduated from the Interior Design program at the Art Institute of Philadelphia and have been working in the design industry ever since.
I live in a sunny plant-filled loft in downtown Newark, NJ with my creative partner James and our two bossy tabbies, Lunar and Nova.
How would you describe your decorating style in three words and who or what influenced that style? Unapologetic Black Pride. Growing up in the Caribbean was a major source of inspiration. The Carnivals & Festivals are a kaleidoscope of colors and textures. Combined with the juxtaposition of colonial and modern architecture, I have no doubt this is where my love for eclectic and Afroboho design started.
As I work with more black people across the diaspora I’m exposed to an even broader array of cultures outside of my own as I help them create spaces that reflect their roots.
Do you have keepsakes or family heirlooms incorporated into your home decor? If so, what are they and why was it important to incorporate them? I don’t have any heirlooms but my desk, made of solid sonokeling rosewood From the Source, is a keepsake I intended to pass down to one of my nieces or nephews someday.
What was one major decorating challenge you faced in your home and how did you solve it? My kitchen doesn’t have a tile backsplash and because I’m renting I opted to go for a more affordable and temporary solution. I installed a peel and stick vinyl wallpaper from Mitchell Black to protect the wall, making clean up much easier and it looks so much better than before!
Why was it important for you to incorporate African decor in your home? What types do you have and what countries are represented? African décor tells my story. It’s important for me to stay grounded and remember my roots. African decor reminds me of the strength of my ancestors, how far I’ve come and no matter how far I go they will never be left behind.
I have collected Kuba cloths from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, mud cloths from Mali, a batik from Ghana, a carved stool from The Gambia, and masks from Senegal.
For those that are hesitant to incorporate African decor into their home or don’t know where to start, what's one piece of advice you’d give them? Go for it. It’s almost impossible to get wrong. A black and white mud cloth throw or pillows is a good place to start. They are easily interchangeable and can work with a range of décor styles from traditional to modern.
I also suggest choosing pieces that speak to you on a spiritual level. Some carved pieces and patterns give me goosebumps and those are generally the ones I’d source for myself or projects. If it speaks to you, go for it!
If you were hosting a dinner party, what three people would you invite and why? I’d invite my favorite actress, Regina King because she seems so down to earth to me. Planetary scientist, Neil deGrasse Tyson, for the dad jokes and real estate investor, and New Jersey native Shaquille O'Neal aka Shaq to learn more about his vision for Newark.
At Reflektion Design our mantra is, See Yourself at Home. How does your home reflect who you are? My home reflects who I am because it displays my passion for plants, books, and African decor. When people come to my home, they often comment on how calm it feels and I think the plants play a major role in that.
By most people’s standards, I have a ton of plants but in my best Luther voice I say, “never too much, never too much”! I love to host and create a warm and inviting atmosphere for my friends. I encourage guests to play albums from my vinyl collection, take a look through my partner's paintings or curl up on the day bed with a novel or magazine from the bookshelves. At the end of the day, my home feels like me. I’ve been blessed with a culturally rich life and my home reflects that.

Here you’ll discover how the company’s founders—African-American maestro Arthur Mitchell of George Balanchine’s New York City Ballet, and Nordic-American Karel Shook of The Dutch National Ballet--created timeless works that challenged Eurocentric mainstream ballet head-on—and used new techniques to examine ongoing issues of power, beauty, myth, and the ever-changing definition of art itself.

]]>We've been home more than ever and one of the positives that's come from it is our curiosity and creativity around food has deepened. We've spent more time experimenting with new recipes, new foods or revisiting our favorite childhood meals to feel closer to family.
October is National cookbook month and what better way to keep the at home cooking momentum going than with a curated list of 9 Cookbooks that Celebrate African Food Across the Diaspora.
Africa is an ideal focus because it's home to thousands of cultures all with distinct flavors and ways of preparing food. Interestingly, many African cuisines are influenced by other cultures, depending on their early interactions with the continent. For example, coastal east African cuisine has been heavily influenced by Asian and Arabic cuisines.
So we're sharing a broad mix of African comfort foods perfect for those longer nights and colder temperates. There's a cookbook for every level and taste bud from East to West Africa + a vegan options as well.
Let me know in the comments which cookbooks you'll gift or give a try yourself. I've got my eyes on #1, 7, and 10.
9. Black Food: Stories, Art, and Recipes from Across the African Diaspora
In this stunning and deeply heartfelt tribute to Black culinary ingenuity, Bryant Terry captures the broad and divergent voices of the African Diaspora through the prism of food.
With contributions from more than 100 Black cultural luminaires from around the globe, the book moves through chapters exploring parts of the Black experience, from Homeland to Migration, Spirituality to Black Future, offering delicious recipes, moving essays, and arresting artwork.
As much a joyful celebration of Black culture as a cookbook, Black Food explores the interweaving of food, experience, and community through original poetry and essays, including "Jollofing with Toni Morrison", "The Spiritual Ecology of Black Food" by Leah Penniman, and "Foodsteps in Motion" by Michael W. Twitty.
8. Senegal: Modern Senegalese Recipes from the Source to the Bowl
-
This cookbook will transport you deep into this country’s rich, multifaceted cuisine. Inspired by the depth of Senegalese cooking and the many people he’s met on his culinary journey, these recipes are Pierre Thiam’s own creative, modern takes on the traditional.
Learn to cook the vibrant, diverse food of Senegal, such as soulful stews full of meat falling off the bone; healthy ancient grains and dark leafy greens with superfood properties; fresh seafood grilled over open flame, served with salsas singing of bright citrus and fiery peppers; and lots of fresh vegetables and salads bursting with West African flavors.

In Flavors of Africa, Evi Aki shares the traditional Nigerian dishes she grew up enjoying, as well as typical eats from all across the continent. She introduces customary recipes from each of Africa’s different regions, including meals from Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Morocco, Egypt, Angola and more, all of which she collected with the help of relatives and family friends.
Sample tried-and-true staples that have survived generations, like Nigerian Red Stew, Jollof Rice, Moroccan Spiced Lamb and Eritrean Red Lentils with Berbere Spice Mix. Enjoy Evi’s unique spin on classics like West African Egusi Soup and Ewa Oloyin (a vegetarian bean dish), in addition to her lighter and healthier take on traditional African street foods like Zanzibar Pizza.
Whether you’re a foodie, a spicy food aficionado or simply looking for a colorful new cuisine to try, Flavors of Africa is an excellent map for your culinary journey.
Somali chef Hawa Hassan and food writer Julia Turshen present 75 recipes and stories gathered from bibis (or grandmothers) from eight African nations: South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Comoros, Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia, and Eritrea. Most notably, these eight countries are at the backbone of the spice trade, many of them exporters of things like pepper and vanilla.
We meet women such as Ma Shara, who helps tourists “see the real Zanzibar” by teaching them how to make her famous Ajemi Bread with Carrots and Green Pepper; Ma Vicky, who now lives in suburban New York and makes Matoke (Stewed Plantains with Beans and Beef) to bring the flavor of Tanzania to her American home; and Ma Gehennet from Eritrea who shares her recipes for Kicha (Eritrean Flatbread) and Shiro (Ground Chickpea Stew).
Through Hawa’s writing—and her own personal story—the women, and the stories behind the recipes, come to life. With evocative photography shot on location by Khadija Farah, and food photography by Jennifer May, In Bibi's Kitchen uses food to teach us all about families, war, loss, migration, refuge, and sanctuary.
5. Afro Vegan
Named one of the best vegetarian cookbooks of all time by Bon Appetit magazine. Chef Bryant Terry blends African, Carribean, and southern cuisines in delicious recipes like Smashed Potatoes, Peas, and Corn with Chile-Garlic Oil, a recipe inspired by the Kenyan dish irio, and Cinnamon-Soaked Wheat Berry Salad with dried apricots, carrots, and almonds, which is based on a Moroccan tagine.
Creamy Coconut-Cashew Soup with Okra, Corn, and Tomatoes pays homage to a popular Brazilian dish while incorporating classic Southern ingredients, and Crispy Teff and Grit Cakes with Eggplant, Tomatoes, and Peanuts combines the Ethiopian grain teff with stone-ground corn grits from the Deep South and North African zalook dip.
There’s perfect potluck fare, such as the simple, warming, and intensely flavored Collard Greens and Cabbage with Lots of Garlic, and the Caribbean-inspired Cocoa Spice Cake with Crystallized Ginger and Coconut-Chocolate Ganache, plus a refreshing Roselle-Rooibos Drink that will satisfy any sweet tooth.

The Akan proverb “The good soup comes from the good earth” elegantly sums up Ghana’s tradition of cooking with seasonal, local ingredients. With an emphasis on locally caught fish and seafood, vegetables, fruits and legumes, Ghana’s cuisine is vibrant, healthful, and eminently appealing.
Limited access to wheat and dairy results in a variety of gluten-free, lactose-free, and vegan options using starches such as plantains, cassava, taro, sweet potatoes and millet, and creamy nut-based soups and sauces.
In over 140 recipes that represent all regions of Ghana, the authors highlight flavor principles, seasoning techniques, and basic stocks, with later chapters dedicated to snacks, soups and stews, protein entrees, beverages, baked goods, and much more.
Fifth-generation Tanzanian Shereen Jog shares her recipes for delicious soups, salads, main meals and desserts in this East African–inspired cookbook.
Bursting with the spices and flavors of East Africa and India, from where a large portion of the population originated, these recipes will inspire everyone to cook mouth-watering meals for their family and friends.
The traditional East African favorites in this book have evolved over the years to account for the growth of the region and the various additional cultures that have been imbibed. East Africa has one of the world’s fastest-growing populations, and the new younger generation is worldly wise and thoroughly modern.
Their exposure to global trends means that a new wave of locally enjoyed cuisine is gaining in popularity across the region. The recipe selection in this book is therefore as modern as it is traditional, as healthy as it is wholesome, as organic as it is contemporary – and is influenced by the different cultures found in Tanzania as well as by Shereen’s travels around the world.
2. Jubilee
Throughout her career, Toni Tipton-Martin has shed new light on the history, breadth, and depth of African American cuisine. She’s introduced us to black cooks, some long forgotten, who established much of what’s considered to be our national cuisine. After all, if Thomas Jefferson introduced French haute cuisine to this country, who do you think actually cooked it?
In Jubilee, Tipton-Martin brings these masters into our kitchens. Through recipes and stories, we cook along with these pioneering figures, from enslaved chefs to middle- and upper-class writers and entrepreneurs.
With more than 100 recipes, from classics such as Sweet Potato Biscuits, Seafood Gumbo, Buttermilk Fried Chicken, and Pecan Pie with Bourbon to lesser-known but even more decadent dishes like Bourbon & Apple Hot Toddies, Spoon Bread, and Baked Ham Glazed with Champagne, Jubilee presents techniques, ingredients, and dishes that show the roots of African American cooking—deeply beautiful, culturally diverse, fit for celebration.
1. The Rise: Black Cooks and the Soul of American Food: A Cookbook
In The Rise, Ethiopian chef, author, and television star Marcus Samuelsson gathers together an unforgettable feast of food, culture, and history to highlight the diverse deliciousness of Black cooking today.
Driven by a desire to fight against bias, reclaim Black culinary traditions, and energize a new generation of cooks, Marcus shares his own journey alongside 150 recipes in honor of dozens of top chefs, writers, and activists—with stories exploring their creativity and influence.
Black cooking has always been more than “soul food,” with flavors tracing to the African continent, to the Caribbean, all over the United States, and beyond. Featuring a mix of everyday food and celebration cooking, this book also includes an introduction to the pantry of the African diaspora.

]]>When an artist invites you into their home you go because you know it will be filled with eclectic decor, a vibe like no other and amazing art of course. Visual artist, wall paper, fabric and interior designer Kenzie Perry gives us a glimpse into his Miami, FL home and it is nothing short of amazing! Let's check it out.
Tell readers a little about yourself and where you live. My name is Kenzie Leon Perry. I was born and raised in Miami, Fl where I still currently live. I was raised by a single mother who discontinued her college education to be an interior designer after I was born. As a child I saw her drawing, sewing and making all types of crafts. I inhaled her talent and I’ve been a creative artist ever since. Initially majoring in Gospel Music in college, I changed my focus to interior design. Since then, I’ve been practicing as an interior designer since 2005.
How would you describe your decor style in three words and who or what influenced that style? I would describe my decor style as masculine, vintage and curated. My decor style is inspired by my love for mid century modern furniture. I was born in 1980, so my family home was filled with furniture from the late 60’s and 70’s and there are some special pieces that still exist. While studying at the university, I was attracted to the work of Charles and Ray Eames who made historical contributions to the development of modern furniture.
Do you have keepsakes or family heirlooms incorporated into your home decor? If so, what are they and why was it important to incorporate them? When I first moved out on my own at the age of 22, I salvaged furniture and home goods from my grandparents house to set up my home. One was a polished chrome table with a white carrera marble top. Then in 2018 upon the passing of my grandfather, I inherited his vintage bar and a collection of glassware. It was important for me to keep the items because they have historical significance, the quality and aesthetic represents loved ones who are no longer with me.
Have you completed a brag worthy DIY project? If so, tell us about it. My brag worthy DIY project is the apothecary console I designed using thrifted furniture. It consists of two chests. One has drawers and the other one has doors. Each facade has nine panels. I revamped the chest by painting each panel black and installed a library card door pull on each. Then I added polish brass feet and a marble slab. It literally looks like a million bucks.
For those that are hesitant to incorporate African decor into their space or don’t know where to start, what's one piece of advice you’d give them? I would suggest they use color as their compass then incorporate African decor that is complementary to that color. African decor is available in a wide range of solid and mixed colors. If you’re looking for a more blended look, use a solid color mask or textile. For an accent of color, consider framing colorful African fabric or upholster a small stool or side chair.
At Reflektion Design our mantra is, See Yourself at Home. How does your home reflect who you are? I’ve always considered my home a sanctuary and given the circumstances of COVID, it has become more dual purpose than ever, housing my interior design studio amongst my living space. Upon visiting, one will see how I have blended my personal paintings throughout and you’ll also see the famous wall mural I painted in the living room. My mom reared me up in thrift stores and flea markets, so you’ll spot vintage pieces everywhere. I also like to blend my fashion obsession with hats and African beads throughout the space. Ultimately, every piece describes who I am because I carefully curated and purchased each piece with intention.

As we slowly begin to welcome friends and family back into our homes we want to welcome them with open arms and an inviting space. What better place to set the tone than in your entryway. It's the first introduction people have to your style and let's people know how you run your ship (shoes off and stored please). lol
-
-
Our entryway was pretty bare except for a couple pieces of art, mirror hung on the wall and small table. We knew we wanted to continue the warm colors and Afro modern vibe that's in the rest of the house here, so the first order of business was to add seating and comfort. That's where Allmodern came in.
This blog post is sponsored by AllModern however all opinions are my own.
They have a vast selection of modern pieces we chose the Brice lumbar pillow, Benning leather bench and Avalance framed art.
It's time to go back to school and your college bound kid, niece, nephew or grandchild wants to go back representing who they are. Reflektion Design has curated a mix of 10 African Inspired Must Haves For Their Dorm Room that will make them feel right at home. Afrocentric items they'll be proud to display like mud cloth pattern journals, coffee mugs, pillows and more. Their dorm will pop with color and culture, the perfect way to start the school year.
Let us know in the comments which items you're grabbing for the college bound folks in your life. I've got my eyes on #1, 5, & 8.
Journals are such an important tool for personal growth and discovery, traits we want young people to start using sooner than later. We use them for our to do lists, goal setting, brainstorming creative ideas or keeping track of the things we're grateful for.
And while technology enables us to use digital tools to capture our ideas there's nothing like putting pen to paper. They'll enjoy taking a break from tech with our hard cover lined journals with unique African inspired patterns. They'll see themselves represented which will encourage them to dive into the 150 pages and let their thoughts flow.
Your college student may not be a big coffee drinker yet, but these mud cloth pattern mugs can hold all kinds of beverages from tea to OJ. And if they do enjoy coffee they'll love the weighted, ceramic feel which keeps hot drinks warm longer. I also like to use them as desk decor. How cute would these mugs be as a pen, pencil and marker holder on their desk. That's what I call multi functional art.
What a beautiful way to keep their desk, bedside table or dresser organized. Our woven serving trays can do more than serve food. They're great for keeping their everyday essentials like jewelry, watches, glasses and more close by and culturally fly. But when they want to use it to carry meals it's great for that too and not too big so it will store easily in often small dorm rooms.
5. Baksets
Your college student isn't basic and their dorm decor shouldn't be basic either. Intricately woven, these handcrafted and colorful baskets are made from banana stalks and dyed sisal. The beautiful design will add so much life and personality to their room. And at 8 inches, they're also a practical storage solution or wall decor. The storage ideas are endless: table/shelf decoration, jewelry decoration, place to drop their keys or spare change.
This isn't your everyday clip board instead it features Afrocentric patterns that will add a sense of pride to their dorm room. Clip boards are cool because they can use them to hang notes for their roommates, messages, reminders or important papers. The pattern is so vibrant it's also a cool piece of art when hung on it's own. Made by Tribal Immunity. Follow them on IG @tribalimmunity
After a long day of acing examples, studying hard and juggling campus activities they deserve a cozy and culturally rich place to lay their head at that end of the day. Our African print fabric pillow covers will brighten their mood and their dorm room with vibrant colors and African inspired patterns. The covers are removable and machine washable for easy use throughout their room.
For more African inspired decor ideas check out Reflektion Design.
Tell readers a little about yourself and where you live. My name is Laquita Tate. I am a wife, a mother, an elementary school principal, blogger, and owner and principal designer of Laquita Tate Interior Styling & Designs. I was born and raised in Memphis, TN where I still reside with my husband, Nate.
How would you describe your decor style in three words and who or what influenced that style? I describe my style as modern, cultured, and textured. My travels and everyday life influence me. I love being surrounded by artwork and things that make me love the space that I am in.
Do you have keepsakes or family heirlooms incorporated into your home decor? If so, what are they and why was it important to incorporate them? I wouldn’t necessarily say family heirlooms, but I do have some artwork that was given to me by an aunt that I still have in my home. They actually were the first real pieces of art that I owned.
It started off my art addiction and now I am a full on art collector with many original pieces and limited edition prints throughout my home. Art speaks to the soul and tells its own story. You won’t find a room in my home without art.
Have you completed a brag-worthy DIY project? If so, tell us about it. There was a time where I tried to tackle it all. However, there are some things that just need to be hired out. I just recently redid my kitchen which is very much a space now worthy of bragging.
I created the design plan for the space, but hired out some parts of it. I had the countertops replaced, the tile put in, and had the sink and faucet installed. Now once everything was in place, I was able to style it to perfection. I thought about every detail and how it would fit and feel in my open concept space. It all came together so beautifully.
Why was it important for you to incorporate decor in your home that celebrates your heritage? What types do you have and what countries are represented? The pieces I chose for our home was done with intention, and I wanted to make sure that I showed pride for our culture and heritage.
It was important for me to decorate with us in mind. I wanted our home to represent who we are. So I made sure to only have black art to dress up our walls because the images look like us. I have African print fabric pillows and Mud cloth framed artwork, baskets from Rwanda, Bolga baskets from Ghana, African fans, and African inspired spoons. Each space in my home will look like and represent the people that inhabit it.
It was especially important to have majority artwork by black artist that’s who we are.
For those that are hesitant to incorporate African decor into their space or don’t know where to start, what's one piece of advice you’d give them? I would tell someone to do their research on any African decor item they are interested in. Know how that item is actually used in Africa because you don’t want to use it in a disrespectful manner, and try your best to purchase from a company that is giving back to that African community.
At Reflektion Design our mantra is, See Yourself at Home. How does your home reflect who you are? My home reflects who I am because it is filled with all things that represent me. From the artwork and coffee table books, to the black walls in the living room, and feminine chic home office it lets people know that I love black art. It lets them know I have a feminine side but I'm also warm, bold, and determined.
My home office with its white walls and feminine touches like shades of pink, and all women artwork that adorns the walls shows that I am a black female and proud of it.
I see myself at home in this place every single day. I look forward to returning here after work. There literally is no other place I would rather be. It is everything to me because it is filled with love, care, and attention.

P.S If you enjoyed this home tour, check out our previous tour featuring entrepreneur, Cherise Rollins you're gonna love it!
]]>Joy, color and self expression. Words that come to mind when you see Cherise Rollin's pillows. Ispaci, her company transforms designer textile samples into beautiful new creations including lumbar pillows, travel pillows, body pillows and more. I discovered her on Instagram and immediately fell in love with her pattern mixing skills and knew her home would be just as vibrant! Take a look at her Los Angeles, CA home.
Tell readers a little about yourself and where you live. Hi, I’m Cherise. I’m an artist and creative entrepreneur living in Los Angeles, California. I moved to LA about 5 years ago from Philadelphia to become part of a larger creative community and to be more connected to my creative passions.
After arriving in LA, I had a deep desire to use my hands to make something. I’ve always been obsessed with textiles, so I purchased a sewing machine and taught myself how to sew a zippered pillow. I had a vision for a new kind of pillow, one that is fully expressive, mixing fabric patterns, colors and textures in a body pillow size, fluffy and super huggable. This pillow brought me so much joy and I wanted others to feel this joy too.
I launched a business making one of a kind pillows from small textile remnants and samples. Sustainability is my solution to making each one different. I’ve built an incredibly diverse fabric inventory often designing custom pillow collections for customers around their room style and personality.
When I’m not making pillows you’ll find me creating earrings from textile scraps and repurposed leathers - I’m a girl who loves bold accessories.
How would you describe your decor style in three words and who or what influenced that style? Textural, colorful, diverse. I’ve always created my home around what I love most in life at the moment. So it’s constantly changing, I don’t create towards a style and I’m not constrained by what may tie in with the space.
I create from my gut and bring in colors, patterns, textures, art, and elements that I feel deeply connected to. It’s gotta bring me joy, and if it passes that test then I find a space for it.
Surprisingly, lately I’ve had a more minimal approach when it comes to my home. I keep the walls white then go nuts with the textiles mixing diverse styles together. Because textiles are my first love, I bring them into my home on large and small scales, and let them set a colorful, cozy, comfortable mood.
I’ve collected textiles on my travels around the world and received as gifts from Mexico, India, Ghana, Turkey, and Japan. I usually add textile art on the walls, then add body lumbar pillows on sofas and beds with a layer of rugs and patterned floor pillows.
Do you have keepsakes or family heirlooms incorporated into your home decor? If so, what are they and why was it important to incorporate them?
Yes, My Grandma Josie is my heart and she is the reason I started making things. As a little girl we’d sit at her kitchen table and create all types of crafts out of ordinary items, it’s the inspiration behind why my art is often about taking discarded items around me and transforming them into something new and beautiful.
She’s a master quilter, knitter, embroiderer, seamstress and everything in between. I have her colorful afghan on my bed, her embroidered doilies on my dresser and coffee tables. They’re a central part of what makes my space feel special and every time I see them I think of this incredible woman who has been an amazing matriarch to our family and who is my creative heart.
I get my artistic gifts from her so I’m reminded to keep following my heart and to never stop making things to share with the world.
Have you completed a brag-worthy DIY project? If so, tell us about it. I have a shower curtain that I love but when I moved from my apartment to my house I didn’t have a use for it in the new bathroom, so I sewed fabric panels to the bottom of it making it longer and used it as the centerpiece on a wall full of curtains that stretched across the entire room.
Then when I moved again, I added more fabrics to it to cover an ugly utility closet door on my balcony patio. In my current space, it now covers the steel tin roof of the outdoor oasis we created in the alleyway, so it’s traveled with me from space to space and just takes the form it needs with a little extra creative problem solving.
Why was it important for you to incorporate African decor into your home? What types do you have? (e.g Art, pillows, bedding, masks ect.) My sister brought textiles back from her trip to Ghana, and I fell in love with the bold bright prints. I knew I needed to make custom pillows from them, but I wanted it to be a design that also had a modern feel so I mixed other fabrics into the design so that they could live in harmony with the other diverse elements in my home.
For those that are hesitant to incorporate African decor into their space or don’t know where to start, what's one piece of advice you’d give them? Don’t overthink it. If you find a pattern and color that speaks to you, grab it. Consider adding pillows with African prints, they can easily move from room to room so if it doesn’t vibe with one space it’s easy to move to another room and I promise it will make you smile.
Wall art works the same way. Start with a natural element like a wood carving to hang on the wall, or something smaller to place on a shelf. Even colorful African coasters will bring a spark of pattern and color to your coffee table.
Try to find out the story behind the pieces you’re drawn to, this will make you feel that much more connected to them. How is it made and by whom? Especially if these are hand crafted items you will begin to appreciate all the details of the art and will be that much more excited to embrace it in your home space.
At Reflektion Design our mantra is, See Yourself at Home. How does your home reflect who you are? As soon as you walk in the front door, you know I’m not shy about color or pattern and that I love textiles.
You’ll also see that I love to travel and there's elements from around the world. My home tells my story and that I love being at home! I’m an introvert at heart and home is my favorite place to be with my dearest loved ones.
It’s my safe space and my sanctuary - it’s where I go to fill up, charge up, rest, relax, love, cry, celebrate, and grow as a human. The love and attention to detail in my home mixed in with all the coziness will definitely tell that story.
My home also reflects my creative entrepreneur side from the stacks of stored supplies to utility shelves full of textiles bins on the wall. Today I’m blessed to have a separate art studio with more work space.
Where can we find you online? On Instagram @ispaci - which is the word “space” between “i” because my mantra is helping you create a beautiful space around your unique personality.
I also have a fun pillow shop with one of a kind pillows for purchase, all handcrafted with designer textiles and premium inserts www.ispaci.com.

P.S If you enjoyed this home tour, check out our previous tour featuring builder, Nicole Jackson you're gonna love it!
]]>If you've been looking for outdoor space inspiration this How We Live home tour is for you. Builder and designer Nicole Jackson has created a tropical oasis in her back yard complete with a cabana and lots of lush greenery. Let's check out her West Palm Beach home that's filled with personality just like she is.
Tell readers a little about yourself and where you live. My name is Nicole and I have a great passion for interior design and building. I was born and raised in New York and have 3 children (one girl and two boys) who are now young adults.
My passion for creating began when I was about 5 years old crafting my own Christmas cards, and making gifts for my mom because I had no money to buy her presents. I painted my bedroom pink when I was just 9 years old. I now live in West Palm beach Florida with my wife Dianne of 14 years.
How would you describe your decor style in three words and who or what influenced that style? My style is tropical modernism and vintage glam. Sorry four words lol. My surroundings are full of color and palm trees, living in a modern ranch style home I wanted to embrace that by bringing the outdoors in and by adding a vintage flair. I love the Gatsby era.
Your outdoor space is full of personality and style. Tell us about it. We love the idea of having the resort-vacation feel at home everyday, so our goal was to create a tropical modern oasis, a small slice of paradise in our backyard.
The first step was building a cabana. I've always been a fan from the really large sized structural cabanas to the small tent like ones you see at many resorts poolside. So I decided to build my own.
I wanted something that was not only beautiful, but functional and would stay up all year round and would survive hurricane season. And that’s when Coco Cabana was born lol.
She's a beast, made of solid wood, and pressure treated deck boards and lighting I installed myself along with solar string lighting. I used bamboo to cover the top and it was the perfect solution to add that tropical flair. Hanging lanterns to complete the look.
How did you decide on the flow of your backyard? Our backyard has specific areas for entertaining. Not one area feels isolated from the other. The cabana ties everything together sitting directly in front, at one end of the pool. And because of it's location and size I decorate it for parties and the holidays giving our backyard a unique look all year round. I’m just getting started! Outdoor kitchen and pizza oven are in the works.
At Reflektion Design our mantra is, See Yourself at Home. How does your home reflect who you are? My style is forever changing, it changes as I grow older in the greatest kind of way. The constant however, the things that mean the most to me tend to be hand carved/handmade because of its meaning and the connection with the artist and culture it came from. So it's important to have those items around me at home.
Where can we find you online? My website Designitvintageliving.com is coming soon but you can also find me on Instagram @design_it_vintage_living and @nicky.builds

]]>David Quarles, IV is a modern renaissance man. He's a talented interior designer, jewelry designer and if you love to eat well he chef's up amazing vegan dishes too. And probably the most fun fact, he'll show you how to work off those calories in one of his high energy Zumba classes. He does it all with style and I couldn't wait to show you his Memphis, TN home filled with two of my favorite design elements: color and art!
Tell readers a little about yourself and where you live. My name is David Quarles, IV, and I’m a designer - both of interiors and jewelry - as well as a fitness instructor. All things art-related hold my attention, and I often get lost in my creative imagination. I was born and raised in Memphis, TN with Creole, Dominican, Gullah and Indigenous American heritage. I'd describe my decor style as Global-Eclectic and Mid-Century Modern.
Do you have keepsakes or family heirlooms incorporated into your home decor? No heirlooms per say. Yet, I do have many references to the moon throughout my home. The moon is the center of a connection my mother and I have that stems from when I was a foreign exchange student in Spain, and I’d get home sick.
When we’d talk on the phone, she told me to always look up at the moon and know she was looking at it with me. That is also when we adopted the phrase “I love you to the moon and back.” My love and connection to the moon only intensified after that moment; in fact, she gifted me a wooden art piece with those words painted on it. Although it isn’t my style, the meaning behind it makes the art adapt to my decor style.
With that, I think it is extremely important to have items in our homes that speak to our family’s history and story. After all, our homes are simply an extension of who we truly are.
Have you completed a brag worthy DIY project? If so, tell us about it. I do, actually! My home was being featured in a local design and decor publication so I decided to redo my dining room. I’d recently bought new furniture, so I had that part of the redesign process complete. However, I planned on doing a wallpapered, feature wall. I ordered the wallpaper, and the day it arrived, my order was short 3 of the 5 rolls needed to complete my project. Moreover, I had a parent fall ill and be admitted to the hospital that same day so I immediately shifted my focus.
After knowing my parent was in the clear, I still had to solve the wallpaper dilemma and meet the fast approaching publication deadline. I only had enough wallpaper to cover a third of my wall, and that particular design was completely out of stock, so I pivoted and decided to paint my own wallpaper.
I came up with a color scheme and pattern then went to Home Depot and painted the entire wall with Behr paint samples; one of them was an “oops” paint sample but I just really loved the color!
It took me about 1.5-2hr to finish the hand-painted wallpaper. And honestly, it was a therapeutic way for me to process the remaining anxiety of having a parent healing from a major health scare!
Thankfully, everything came together in the end, the photoshoot went well, and my home made for a pretty cool magazine feature!
Why was it important for you to incorporate decor in your home that celebrates the many facets of your heritage? What types do you have and what countries are represented? I love my cultural heritage and let it influence how I live my life in every aspect. So in the home, I think it’s important for us to have touches of who we are culturally to show a healthy amount of pride in ourselves. And now there's an ever-increasing amount of Black artists out there painting us in real-life settings, it’s a great opportunity for us to show support to those artists for breathing new life into a form of expression that oftentimes in history didn’t represent us nor our story.
Being of Afro-latinx background, I have art that intentionally reflects the variety that makes up my family’s cultural story. I have a few prints from artist Rickey Charles of New Orleans, as well as some original art from various painters in the Dominican Republic. One of my absolute favorite paintings is one that I bought in DR and now hangs in my dining room. I adore this painting so because it combines my love of dance, music, visual art and community all in one canvas! Too, it depicts the many different hues present in the Dominican heritage - something not too often seen due to a history of severe colorism. But, that’s another (important) discussion for another day.
Since art is usually displayed in a home to express our love and affinity to a certain subject matter, I feel that having art that reflects us culturally is one of the highest forms of self-love.
For those that are hesitant to incorporate African decor into their space or don’t know where to start, what's one piece of advice you’d give them? As I’d tell any of my clients, choose what speaks to you. Start off small, buying one or two pieces - be it a sculpture or woven fans - and gradually layer them into your decor. Since African decor is full of texture and pattern, it can be too much for a space if done in large amounts.
However, just as the art or decorative piece itself was carefully crafted to tell a story, we should apply that same method to including African decor in our homes. Take your time to curate a home with pieces that speak to your cultural history with care and intention. And since it’s all beautiful, what a fun process it will be!
At Reflektion Design our mantra is, See Yourself at Home. How does your home reflect who you are? One thing about my home is that it is colorful! In daily life, I like to bring cheer and joy to myself and to others. There’s enough in this world to rob us of such. For that reason, I like for my home to be as uplifting as the person I set out to be. Balanced out with a majority of white walls and neutral furniture, I let art and other decorative accessories bring in the color and cheer into my home!
I respond to color a bit differently than most. I’m a synesthete and I specifically process sound and emotion as color. So the palette I choose for my home must reflect the joyfulness I aim to feel, while picking me up on those not-so-easy days.
